Main ingredients –semolina and bread

A step by step recipe of bread idli – a floppy recipe of idli made with bread and semolina.

Here is my south Indian recipe which is basically cooked by using 2 main ingredients as semolina and bread.

I love south Indian food specially idli, masala dosa, pudina rice, tomato bhat, Chitrana, rava masala dosa, rava idli, puliogray etc. I it’s a big list, but last but not the least my favorite curd rice, which I can have anytime.

And just because of my love for the south Indian cuisine, I always try to do more and more innovation with my food. So I tried this bread idli. Once before I have also did some other experiments with my idlies which are –carrot idli and tiranga idli as well.

But this recipe is not my own, I have seen it on a food site, for the idias to do fun try with food. Its always good to do some fun with food. This makes you to feel energetic.

I love to do experiments with the basic recipes to make them special and innovative.

Here I was making bread dosa last night and some better of dosa was left after having the dinner, so I did a quick mix of rava and some curd with 1 tsp of baking soda and 1 tsp of baking powder along with salt in the batter. And prepared these floppy and soft idlies in the morning for my breakfast.

here some of my recipes are same as in bread dosa, because i did these two recipes with the same batter.

Ingredients for bread idli –

  1. Bread -10
  2. Semolina -2 cups
  3. Butter milk -4 cups
  4. Baking powder -1 tsp
  5. Baking soda -1 tsp
  6. Salt to taste

Ingredients for tempering –

  1. Oil -2 tsp
  2. Black mustard seeds -1 tsp

How to make bread masala dosa? –

  1. Take the breads in a plate and cut its wedges.
  2. Now take the semolina in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add bread into it.
  4. Add salt to it.
  5. Now add butter milk and mix.
  6. Keep it aside for 30 minutes.
  7. After 30 minutes grind this paste into a mixer grinder.
  8. Now add the baking soda and baking powder and leave it for 5 minutes. You can see this mixture has risen.
  9. Now heat the oil in a small pan and temper it with black mustard seeds.
  10. Pour this mixture on the batter and mix well.
  11. Now take 4 cups of water in your idli maker or take according to the size of your idli maker.
  12. Now Greece the plates of your idli maker with oil.
  13. Fill it with the batter.
  14. And arrange it in the pot.
  15. Cook the idlies on high flame.
  16. Check after 15 minutes, if it is done remove the plates from the pot immediately, and let them to be cool.
  17. Remove the idlies from the plate and serve hot with sambhar and  coconut chutney.

Step by step recipe with pictures –

Take the breads in a plate

and cut its wedges.

Do the same with rest of the breads.

Now take the semolina in a mixing bowl.

Add bread into it.

Add salt to it.

Now add butter milk and mix.

Keep it aside for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes grind this paste into a mixer grinder. take it in a jar.

and grind to make it smooth.

You can see the difference between grounded and ungrounded mixture.

Now add the baking soda and baking powder and leave it for 5 minutes. You can see this mixture has risen.

Now heat the oil in a small pan

And temper it with black mustard seeds.

Pour this mixture on the batter

And mix well.

Now take 4 cups of water in your idli maker or take according to the size of your idli maker.

Now Greece the plates of your idli maker with oil.

Fill it with the batter.

And arrange it in the pot. Cover it with the lid and put it on the flame. Cook the idlies on high flame.

Check after 15 minutes, if it is done remove the plates from the pot immediately, and let them to be cool.

Remove the idlies from the plate. You can see how floppy they are.

Serve hot with sambhar and  coconut chutney.
